"protestant" work ethic is perhaps a stretch, chinese and indians and probably others have plenty of it aswell - however "work ethic" does exist, and traditional protestant culture is full of it... so much so it can be abused, hence the backlash from many moderns.
the ability to agree on an amount of labour, then deliver it day in and day out is not garunteed by some cultures - id say many tropical cultures and gatherer cultures are pretty good at doing the minimum then chilling, and not being very much into the "work ethic" thang.
id also say this isnt so much a christian thing but more tied to the underlying culture, the protestant cultures valued hard work before they hilighted the bits of the bible that support that worldview, the tropical christians valued community and tend to hilight those aspects of the bible instead.
