The self is just a funny thing. That it is a bad thing probably stems from a self that wants to self-mutilate.

thinking about it a tad more - I realise its the indian flavour of "east" which Is the most prone to that kind of attitude and its not correct to project it onto the rest.

It depends a great deal on which period you are talking about, and of course where. Sometimes it's better to be here than there. I just generally don't see a clear East/West divide.

Today one is probably still best off in North America, some of Western Europe, or Australia, but who knows about tomorrow.
