i must say that my freedom and self determination whine does go silent when the topic of paid holidays comes up.

I can play my "family first" card and say that mandated holidays (including the sabbath) are very important for the health of your local community.
Sunday trading and working through major cultural festivals like christmas and easter ruin any ability to get everyone together.
