March corn contracts closed today at $7.06.

Corn inventories are at 15 year low with 6 months to harvest.

Droughts in China, South America, record cold impeding southern US corn belt.

Huge transfer of feeding livestock and humans to feeding internal combustion engines.

Is this a planned strategy to equalize transfer of payments deficits with oil producing nations?

I don't know about any of that fancy financial elites magic. It always seemed to me just a way for the corn lobby to increase their access to subsidies.

Not sure I buy the fancy manipulation stuff. Seems to me more mundane than all that.

was thinking more in terms of the ethanol subsidy that is eating more than a third of th US corn crop now.

Not until June will we know the extent of the damage to China's winter wheat crop, virtually all its production. Extremely low rainfall this winter parched more than 5 million hectares of 14 million hectares planted, and the next few weeks' weather will determine if the world faces a real shortage of the staff of life.

Hoarding on the part of North African countries, starting with Algeria, has already pushed up the wheat price in the Mediterranean to a 20% premium over the price shown on the Chicago futures market. The immediate risk is that pre-emptive purchases of wheat will price the grain out of the reach of poor Egyptians, not to mention Pakistanis and Bengalis.

Corn ethanol isn't even green ... if you think about all the fertilisers than go to produce it. The hydrogen to make the ammonia to make nitrogen fertilisers, is made by cracking natural gas. It's lamentably true that all developed countries pamper their farmers, out of a mixture of nostalgia and an effective lobby. The European CAP and Japanese subsidies are even worse.

Fertiliser politics are interesting. If oil becomes worthless, the Arabs can always fall back on phosphates (Morocco has half the world's reserves)- otherwise, sorry, Grandad, your bones will have to be recycled when you go...

As for potash, the world's unlikeliest cartel - Belarus and Saskatchewan !

This is a bit silly. The amount of matter that passes though us is far greater than the amount we take with us to our graves, cryonic pods and incinerators. Since we eat about 3 pounds of food and drink about 2 liters of water each day, I'd guess a man poops about 350kg per year (guessing a reasonable estimate of about 70% water). Over 85 years, that's about 30,000 kg, roughly five hundred times more than granny's dead husk. In other words, it makes far more sense to recapture various useful chemicals out of crap than out dead bodies.

Not that eating crap is much better than gnawing on the dead, mind you.

most tilapia farmed in Asia is produced by feeding human feces into raising ponds.

Workers housing built on raised platforms above the ponds have a direct poop chute/feed delivery system.

tilapia seems to be a walmart speciality...

What I find surreal is that people think that using humans as fertilizer is more disturbing than cutting the body open, sewing the eyes shut, cutting the facial muscles so that the expression looks serene, putting on more make-up than Joan Rivers and paying exhorbitant fees for a polished wood veneer cabinet, that will then be buried in the ground preserving the biomass for no other reason than to preserve it.

To me using dead bodies for fertilizer is far less disturbing than the sick fetishism that puts an onerous financial burden upon the living.
