Obama has sacked Gen. Stanley McChrystal and nominated Gen. David Petraeus, current commander of US Central Command, to replace him as the General in charge of the war in Afghanistan.
This is a highly unusual move, not the least of which because Petraeus is taking on a new post that is decidedly not a promotion, considering that as CENTCOM commander, Afghanistan was just one of several nations in his Area of Responsibility.
McChrystal, who technically resigned, was sacked because of remarks attributed to him and his command staff which, appearing to mock the Administration, were printed in Rolling Stone this week.
Petraeus is the apple in the eye of Republicans who really want to run Eisenhower 2012. But now it's looking like the General, once he is speedily approved by the Senate in his new appointment, will not have a lot of time to spend in these United States...

Well to be fair, the issue I raised WAS the change in command over there.

Noctolator The demotion of Petraeus is quite interesting. It's sort of like Obama said, "This problem calls for...A CELEBRITY!!!"

There is a possibility that he figured Petraeus would simply do the best job and that a primary focus on Afghanistan was in the country's (US, Afghanistan isn't a country) best interests.

That is a quite interesting theory. If Obama is playing politics like that, then he really can't possibly have our best interests at heart and perhaps Spengler has been right about him all along.

We all know that the first duty of a first-term president is to get himself re-elected.
