Very sad. Congress on Your Corner is how every elected official should behave, at least once a week when they are in town.

Apparently she is only one of many shot, fifteen to twenty shots were fired, there are some fatalities, and there are conflicting reports regarding whether the shooter is in custody.

While there is no hard evidence at this point to suggest that the shooting was politically motivated, Matt Yglesias points out that an anti-Giffords event was held in June with the billing: "Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly."

Rep. Giffords was also on Sarah Palin's "target list."

As noted earlier, a gun was dropped at a Giffords event in 2009, and her office was vandalized in March.

Apparently the Congresswoman is alive. Sadly, 6 others are not.

There are reports that a federal district court judge is among the dead.

The worst imaginable news: A 10-year-old child is among the dead.

This guy has some indicators that are pretty up there on the scale for a high- functioning paranoid schizophrenic.

Well , we hope it's just a lone nut.

I can't pretend to know what to say about this event and I can only lay blame at the feet of Jared Lee Loughner, but I hope that some will find cause to pause as they consider what sort of rhetoric to employ as they advance their causes. I don't offer that "advice" without addressing it to me as well. This ought to be a turning point. I suspect it will not be.

I am for banning guns .. these kind of senseless tragedies happen in America too often .. there is no justification of so many guns in public hands ..

People often talk about the chilling effect of hate speech laws etc. in countries other than the US. Well, what needs to be considered as well is the lack of violence against our government and judicial officials.

I had occasion to ask a prosecutor just the other day about threats to his safety, and he said that in 22 years the worst that he had was some hang up calls; when he got his number unlisted, they stopped.

We can all access Youtube videos supposedly by the deranged assassin.

We live in a strange world.

I'm finding more stuff out about him. Getting a political category on the guy is impossible. He's just a nut. This is political in the same way that Chapman killing Lennon was to save children. I have no doubt that somewhere along the line , someone somewhere said something that fueled his fire , but we aren't responsible for what aggravates the insane. Everything aggravates the insane. That's why we call them insane.

If it is your opinion that this guy was spurred on by some website , you will probably have to go back to some website from when he was in high school. At that point , two of his favorite books were from Hitler and Marx. I doubt he actually read them , but it's a sure sign of early- onset batshittery.

Face it; some people wanted to turn this guy into a hitman for Glen Beck before the blood was dry on the concrete. Now it turns out he could just as easily been inspired by the Bible , or Inna Gadda Da Vida or what have you , and the burn is just kickin'. I'm waiting for a convo on gun control within hours if not minutes.

No , no thanks. No faction represents my opinion on that, and I think something snapped about a week ago and I woke up realizing I am fundamentally and temperamentally unsuited to arguing the viewpoint of another. I anticipate an approximate 73.86r% reduction in my own level of aggravation as a result. I might interject likelihoods based on my observation. I might contribute a pertinent fact or two. I may even argue an ought every once in a while.

Short of that, though ? Nobody can deprive me of a means if either self defense or of revolution ( to cover both areas of the good gun owner's concern). The underlying principle , that a subject is governed while a citizen is entrusted , well , that score was settled some time ago. now it's just a matter of clean up. I searched around inside myself and came to the conclusion the y'all can all make what rules you want to on that front. They won't be my rules and I have no intention of following them beyond what is convenient.

Now , back to the actual issue , which is not crosshairs on a website so much as the fact that there are a lot of Americans for whom such symbols are not extreme enough. But if they were acting , they would have gone after a Pelosi or a Frank or a Schumer. Instead , a nut that had nothing to do with any intelligible cause targeted someone that would more readily be seen as a traitor to liberals.
