Yes, things moving to that direction .. no national elite anymore .. no national markets anymore .. global elite and global market .. acting not in national or regional interest anymore .. already happening .. things will look and happen differently, things must be viewed with global views .. no such thing as isolationism anymore .. either you part of it or you fucked .. oligarch is the wrong word .. there will be grouping of elites .. that's how west functioned post war .. now other groups of elite entering the scene .. probably 3 or 4 elite groups try to live together or fight it out ..

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, Endo. The problem is that it's becoming more and more difficult to penetrate these circles and the article illustrates why.

As for me personally, I made the very stupid decision of entering a PhD program in engineering. Although I will be completely debt free when I leave, it's clear that lacking the elite pedigree, and having fallen into a project with little academic merit, the degree will be worthless. Engineering jobs are increasingly mundane dead ends, as far as I'm concerned. I've sunk 4.5 years into this (including an MS along the way) and am looking for a way to get out and switch career tracks.

Oddly, it seems that finance and management will remain the place for talented people here.

I agree with Colonel Sun.

But Finance is undergoing a productivity revolution. Data availability, computerization, and increased communication are and will continue to reduce the number of people needed in the industry through allowing fewer and fewer to manage larger and larger amounts of capital because it decreases the diminishing returns of increasing portfolio size.

Besides, do you really want to spend a year or two as an ibanker?

If you want a stable career with good earnings potential, work for the government.

Or, if you want to be even MORE realistic than competing for highly competitive Government jobs that require you to do several years of working for free in order to get into a low paying job with few prospects for increasing one's salary very significantly, you can simply accept that the job market is highly competitive regardless of industry.

The thing is that no matter how you wrap it up, charity from the rich is still exactly that. We did not get a middle class etc. because the rich donated us into it, we got it because economics started it and political action created a bunch of public spheres that supported it and enlarged it.

We cannot bet our future on the hope that some gazillionaire's whimsy will benefit us.

2) I don't think the last author has done the math, if you liquidate the holdings of the "super rich" and divvy it up with everybody, you get diddly/squat. A deeply anti-intellectual set of articles.
