Funny how we went for so long with a free press and no one seemed to mind. Now for some reason because the medium is different people think that journalist should have to expose their sources? It's not strategic to hide one's sources, it's standard practice.

That doesn't even mean anything.
There aren't two societies where it's the elite and their shills and everyone else. We all are complicit and part of the system. The notion that all journalists have access to the elite is silly.

I thought "anonymity" was a transient state at best and an illusion at worst. Are we forgetting that?
Pseudonyms and source protection are powerful agents. They serve the individual and I would give up neither. They are keystones to literacy and the cornerstone to great cultures. To give up or chisel away at either would lessen the value of reading, speaking and thinking in general. That is a goal expedient to no one who is kind.

ALI - What's your name and address IRL? What's your IP and LAN addy? Do you have any passwords you'd like to share with the group?

im only anon in the sense that if a potential employer tries my name in google it should be mostly useless, and if they become aware of my alias, good luck with the gollywogs.
there are 2 equally strong memes on this issue so its no cut and dried to my mind what the outcome will be yet.
a) wikileaks style annoying the powers that be forces the moral panic and horror stories into overdrive and we end up with real identities on the net being compulsory ..papers please.
versus
b) stalkers and pedophiles using the net to find the vulnerable ones - one of the big gaming companies just backed down on real ids because of this,.
