It does seem that the only cure for the American disease is to put the Republicans in charge of everything and let them pass whatever they want until their base is gone, due to all of the death and economic collapse.

However, can the Democrats, let alone the rest of the world, afford such nihilism? After all, Spengler continues to write about how Obama withdrawing from foreign entanglements will crash the dollar! The only explanations for this sort of cognitive dissonance are either that Spengler has forgotten everything that he ever learned about economics or that he feels that having the Rs back in charge is worth any amount of dishonesty.

Spengler is quite typical as well. And one thing the R machine knows is that they have succeeded in convincing the rest of us that they are crazy enough to destroy it all, so we play their game and fight them, proving to their base that we are what they say we are.

Default for a country like the United States, with a fiat currency and debt denominated in that same currency, is impossible. It is my understanding that bonds are often redeemed not with tax revenue but in fact by adding numbers to a central bank account balance. The real risk is debasement of the currency and volatility in asset prices if economic growth cannot overcome interest on debt.
