It's pretty sad that people seem to have forgotten how to take care of themselves. I figure self-interest is actually the first order of interest for a rational human. You can't care for others if you can't care for yourself.

The pleas for DC to "do something" are really pretty ironic, considering the reason water and sewer rates are astronomically high in rural areas is exactly because of DC "doing something." If extremely stringent water and effluent standards had been allowed to be phased in more gradually, with a bit more help for rural municipalities (the changes in EPA regulations being a GIGANTIC unfunded mandate) this story would never have been written.

So, as usual, the federal government, that caused the problem in the first place, is being called upon to fix things. I can only assume their fix will introduce more problems down the road.

Sewage Meters make sense from a free-market standpoint. Pay for everything you use.

300 bucks a month purchases a bio toilet, water tank and filters within a year or 2.

it aint free market and it certainly aint an example of the benefits of socialised efficiencies of scale.. it smells more like another word when your forced to pay extortive fees to keep a small group of entitled elites in the manner to which they wish to grow accustomed.

I don't recall discussing relative costs, but certainly any state/provincial/federal government takes a bath on tiny towns.

bullshit (!) bio toilets arent that big or expensive and can be made workable in most suburbs.... all it needs is will... much of my suburbia has only very recently moved from septic tanks to mains sewerage and septic tanks are bigger than modern bio toilets.

the only output is fertilizer and water both of which are commodities, big apartment blocks would be sitting on a goldmine.

its about system dependance, the system cant tolerate solutions which dont leave you dependant on it.. its beyond the scope of their little minds, they can only provide solutions with ongoing costs and stable employment for the people in charge of those systems... then they tweek those costs to make their life as comfy as they can... they get communism and everyone else gets facism.

anyway, sucks to be poor in alabama, and sucks doubly to be in a head space that doesnt leave you empowered to do something about it.

i only piped in cause it was called "free market" because you have to pay for it.. hohohohohho. paying for things is not free market when its government enforced from a single supplier.

the funny part here is that the "socialists" wont allow water tanks because its unfair that some people get access to more rainfall collection than others and its too dangerous to risk people not filtering it correctly, hence we all must use the mains .... and what happened in alabama is happening here, the socialised cost is too high for the poor and its getting worse because of the investment in desalination and climate taxes.... all the rainfall that doesnt land in dams goes into the ocean :/

anyone with a roof and a bit of backyard should be doing water tanks and bio toilets and breaking the law... the system has proved its not capable.
