More fiber in fast food is probably not a bad thing, even if it is artificial.
I do worry about the use of meat glues to make cheap hamburger patties out of liquified meat, though. I suspect it might be a greater cause of arteriosclerosis than cholesterol.

I just assume the people that make processed foods are trying to kill us. It may not be totally accurate, but close enough.

one of my uncles has a funny story about building a little wood chipping machine to make red-sugary-stuff look like proper strawberry jam.

Thanks for the link. Although in this instance, the wood probably passes right through. My family had dropped most things processed or with preservatives from our diet over six months ago - nothing in a can, nothing fast food, most things in boxes. It's more expensive to live that way, but is highly recommended. All of us experience more energy in our days, and my skin has never looked better in my life. Drop MSGs from your diet as soon as possible, or can afford it money-wise and time-wise.

Wood is harmful period. Not in that it does damage, but in that digesting it or simply passing it through the digestive tract requires energy, more energy than is required for other types of food that we can digest.

What you call "wood", Tinker, is purified cellulose. It's what is in natural laxatives. A certain amount of fiber is required to keep your bowels regular.
Too little is far more dangerous to your health than too much. You make it sound like people are just grinding up 2x4's and throwing them into the Hobart.

If I were making my food, how much wood might I mix in? How much purified plant celulose?
Why might I pay someone else to do that?
Good for me? Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining. Nothing fixes bad nutrition. This is bad nutrition.

in the grand context of all the crap that appears in highly processed food, wood fibre is quite low on the worry list.
i do note that local growers markets are getting bigger and bigger over here, and cooking shows have been topping the charts for the last few years.

I just like my food to have food in it.
Old fashioned, I know.

Avoiding heavily processed foods seems like a good idea to me, but the popular dialogue on food and health is more polluted with pseudo-science than even the climate change debate.
Also, I'm not so sure about even the theoretical merits of the "paleo diet." Let's eat what we ate when life expectancies were 35. Looking at life expectancy alone apparently you should eat like people from Crete or certain parts of Japan. Fish and green plants? Could be worse.

Grains are like THE perfect food and product for our present social and economic arrangements. They are as essential as the faith in the system itself, as they literally are the lifeblood. They are paid for by tax payers. And then purchased again. And then alluded to in downstream healthcare. And lots of other effects I'm missing.
On a personal level, I'm also convinced grains are basically poison, at least with the present embrace of nonsense like whole grains and soy being somehow better for you. Don't eat them and watch your body return to a physical and spiritual center. Meh.
