I just do not see a credible threat that requires things like the F-35. We could send up drones that are basically just air to air missile launch vehicles that weigh half of what an F-16 does without fear of losing a pilot.
The Osprey on the other hand is what gets our Marines in and out of theater. That's what we need to get Marines into bumblefuckistan to take out an Al Qaeda trading post, not an F-35.
And I don't think it's 10-20 years out. A friend of mine whose company builds the supercomputers that model radiological material, told me that my estimates of how long it would take us to get to Star Trek were too conservative. She says that 3D printing is advancing faster than even I think.
I have no doubt that Lockheed, DARPA, Boeing etc... have the ability to pop out new designs really damn fast.
Just wait until the Starcraft/Eve Online generation gets in on it. As an aside, if anyone has paid attention to my posting of the Eve Online GoonSwarm operational manuals. These are a lot of the cats that are involved with OWS and Anonymous and such. They've been playing their decentralized empire building training simulators their whole lives. Stop thinking turn and burn and start thinking of a swarm of these air to air missile systems being tasked by some Starcraft multitasker.
The canary didn't die because this mine is dangerous, it died because it's lazy and wasn't raised with a proper work ethic.
