FWIW, I think some sort of minimal missile defense system to take down one or a few missiles launched by mistake or a rouge commander* might be worthwhile. Otherwise not so much. To easy to deliver nukes otherwise from what I understand.


*Supposedly this has come close to happening: a drunk Russian general supposedly ordered a launch but fortunately, his subordinates decided to call Moscow first........... Thank G_d they were Russians and not WW2 Germans

Iran is one of the few cases where missile defense might actually work. If you have a system of interceptors and persistent overwatch on Iranian airspace you stand a reasonably good chance of hitting the one or several rickety missiles that Iran would hypothetically launch at Israel (assuming they had nukes and assuming they actually decided to launch them for no reason).


The idea of nation- or continent-wide defense shields making nukes obsolete is a fantasy with a proven track record of failed tests under optimal conditions.
