Living it, but won't say a word. Need the work and the money. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Historical trends always seem to lead us down this road.

mattmovies The number of Gen X and Gen Y kids who graduated thinking they'd be making $ 75k per year 5 years out of college is stupefying. It was sort of true during the dotcom boom if you knew your way around a computer, it setup poor standards. So your adjunct professor is setting up a bunch of kids for failure. I have followed the path that he describes and at times it can be brutal.
On the other hand, if you're like me and willing to sleep in the park, there is a level of freedom that can be attained. It goes away once you have kids though.

Tinker, you bring up a good point. The "pearls of wisdom" that are being obtained during this economic recession/depression are going to be really interesting, and the bad messages are going to take a generation to sort themselves back out again. I wonder if this is how superstitions get developed. My perverse side wants to do a little fast forwarding to see what my generation does when they fill up Congress. Boy is that government going to be warped!
Agreed that this latest graduating generation was sort of set up to fail. During the past decade there was also the most attention to "self esteem" programs in public schooling. Self esteem is good to promote, but I wonder if some of the latest grads even have the tools to deal with failing to hit that $75k.

Self-esteem programs are the worst things to ever happen to anyone. You know what builds self-esteem? Actual fucking accomplishment.

relationships - whenever some idiot tries to reduce all the wonderful complexity and variation to "one situation with one response" you know you are dealing with a damaged whiner that should be ignored.
its like listening to the drunk guy at the pub on how all women are evil, or the grumpy feminist whining about all men, or the happily married couple for that matter.
get older, get wiser - pick your relationships with more clarity... their are no rules for all outcomes, just the person infront of you and your ability to spot whats going on.
and i might aswell sneek in a stock whine about lots of smaller business is better than fewer large business - which is probably the cause of the "decline" as all our free markets turn into oligopolies entwined with government.
its far more likely you can find a boss you can have a decent relationship with because their is more variety of them to choose from and far more chance you will be an important part of his business rather than being one disposable amongst many.
