EU Monitoring Expulsion of Roma from France

This isn't going to be pleasant, especially since the Roma in question do not want to come back and we, Romanians and Bulgarians, do not want them back. The French will blackmail us with accession to the Schengen space, so the local government will have to do something. Not sure what exactly.

How would this issue relate to the ratification of the Schengen Area by Romania and Bulgaria? If Bulgaria and Romania sign on won't that make the expulsion of the Roma a moot point?

The French argue that Romania and Bulgaria's ratification should be blocked because these two countries are flooding Europe with their indesirables and that something should be done to keep the gypsy home. Nobody has any idea what.

Part of the French media says that Sarkozy is simply trying to appear tough on foreigners in order to improve his image. Which is probably what this is all about.

That'll never change unless they abandon their ways and traditions. In a settled and largely industrialised Europe where almost everyone makes their living through waged labour, there is simply no place for a nomadic people who live by their wits.

At the end of the day illegal immigrants are just that, so nobody should be surprised when the state cracks down.

I doubt that you can have a sensible immigration policy that is also a 'nice' one.

Just because the law is unenforced elsewhere, in location or time, doesn't give you any ammunition when it is enforced. I suppose if it wasn't the EU, it would be 'citizens of the world' or some such drivel.

And sending people from a fully developed democracy to a slightly less developed one is no holocaust. It is in more than very poor taste that you make the comparison.
