US officials said the 8.8-magnitude quake struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles.

Colonel Sun was the first one I thought of when I heard about this. I hope he and anyone else in the forum that are in Japan are safe.

I certainly hope this isn't as bad as it looks, and share everyone's sentiments on the Colonel and look forward to hearing from him.
IIRC, the Colonel is in or near Kyoto, isn't he? It this quake hit much further north.

From the descriptions I have been hearing of this earthquake, I get the awful feeling that if anything likes this ever hits Lisbon (and we have had serious earthquakes before), nothing will be left standing. I very much doubt that our anti-seismic building rules are up to such a devastating and prolonged quake. That Japanese buildings have been able to withstand such a quake is certainly due to very high engineering standards.

It looks like the epicenter was about 100 miles out to the sea. Make no mistake, casualties will be heavy, and mostly from the tsunami and the ensuing fires. Let's hope they manage to contain the situation at their #1 reactor at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima.
