For the past year the North Korean News has had stories about how they have made huge strides in food technology and how people now do not have to eat so many noodles because the ones they have now are more nutritious. This of course means that they have let their food stocks dwindle and that they are running out of surplus grain. Now compound that with a horrible Russian grain harvest and an equally horrible grain harvest in China and you can imagine the pressure that North Korea is now under. They can not count on any of their traditional allies for grain to feed the population. They need help from the west and they need leverage to get that extra grain. This political action is for one damn thing and one thing only food.

the gunboat diplomacy tactic seems to be the accepted reading of this situation.

the bit thats hard for me to grasp is how long the south korean internal politics lets them keep being a punching bag, as i was under the impression the current southern leadership is less peacenik than the previous, in reaction to this trend.

If it comes to war, the US should stay out of it besides a clear-cut and comprehensive logistical support for the South. Basically make it plain to the North, South and China that America won't enter the shooting war unless some of our freighter get sunk. In which case we just launch one sortie from the carriers in range, and bomb every North Korean position that is available, sink every ship we can in a single strike. Then go back to not being involved in the shooting war. Just let them know that any attack on Americans will result in this kind of disproportionate attack. So that if they don't want us involved, they shouldn't attack our ships.
