I wonder what happened to civilization. It used to be, a man pulled out a gun and shot someone, people would ask, 'Why would this man do this? What were his motives?'
Now we just ask, 'Whose fault is this?' as if said man was clearly blameless. Clearly someone else must have caused him to do it. Clearly he couldn't be responsible in any real way. It must be someone, someone living, someone whose behaviour we can change. Because it all must be both within our control as a society and out of the control of anyone besides television personalities.
Of course, the youtube page of the shooter lists Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto among favorite books, along with... nothing by Sarah Palin. But it couldn't be that a moral degenerate reading books how many of us have read and quoted in PoliSci 101 could have taken them seriously, and acted to kill a Jewish Congresswoman. Nah. That would make him in some way morally responsible. And he's dead, so what political fun is there in that?
Trends that can't continue, won't. But until then, they will.
