We should know soon whether Khamenei or Ahmadinejad holds the cards. Khamenei told Ahmadinejad to accept his nominee for a cabinet position or resign. If he gets his way, one way or the other, he is more powerful (and it would appear that Bueno de Mesquita is on to something), if not, Ahmadinejad is more powerful.

The big factor is, for now, who does the RG back, and I think that the RG feels that Ahmadinejad is too independent. I hear that . They want someone more under their influence. Jafari wouldn't slap someone he respects, likes or fears.

A senior Iranian official has threatened to allow the transit of illegal drugs through its territory to Europe should the West continue criticizing the Islamic nation's human rights record.

Mohammad Javad Larijani also defended Iran's record on fighting the drug trafficking, noting that 74 percent of executions in Iran are related to drug offenses.

The comments by Larijani, who is the head of Iran's High Council for Human Rights, were posted on the Iranian judiciary's website Saturday.

Iran lies on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe and authorities regularly confiscate large amounts of drugs from traffickers, mainly opium and heroin.

Every year Iran burns some 66 tons (60 metric tons) of seized narcotics to signal its determination to fight drugs.

WASHINGTON: The father of Pakistans nuclear bomb, Abdul Qadeer Khan, has vigorously defended Pakistans nuclear programme as being the main cause Pakistan was spared the fate of Iraq and Libya.
Writing in Newsweek magazine, Abdul Qadeer Khan has said Pakistans nuclear weapons had prevented war with historic rival India, which he accused of pursuing a massive programme due to its ambition for superpower status. Dont overlook the fact that no nuclear-capable country has been subjected to aggression, occupied, or had its borders redrawn. Had Iraq and Libya been nuclear powers, they wouldnt have been destroyed in the way we have seen recently, Khan said.

Khan also argued that Bangladesh would not have won independence from Pakistan in 1971 if Pakistan had nuclear weapons then. India supported Bangladeshs independence, which came after a nine-month long struggle that was harshly put down by Pakistani forces. Many Pakistanis regard Khan as a hero for building the Islamic worlds first nuclear bomb. Khan also admitted in 2004 that he ran a nuclear black-market selling secrets to Iran, Libya and North Korea. Khan later retracted his remarks and in 2009 was freed from house arrest but asked to keep a low profile.
