Every time I see how little we spend on science compared to the rest of the budget, chock full of waste after waste, I want to scream. We spent more on air conditioning tents for troops in Iraq and AFG than we do on NASA.

I mean, I like going ten thousand miles away from any legitimate concern and killing little brown people just as much as anybody. But seriously, is there any other investment in the future that has a better return than R&D? Why does a nation that was practically raised from the dust by virtue of intelligent use of science prioritize things that low?

I'm all for saying that it may not be a legitimate ( libertarian) function of government and whatnot, but FFS, if we are going to have mohair subsidies, we can't fund stuff like stem cell research appropriately? Personally, I would very much like for our scientists not to be even what GC calls " low income". If I had my way, kids would be fighting to be the next Salk, not Lady Gaga.

my country does extremely little science for science's sake - even the universities are orientated towards commericially relevant research, its been sad for ages.

we just dont have the culture or coherancy to do so anymore - anti science religious people, business orientated bean counters, lots of different agenda groups all playing political agendas with zero interest in the actual science... risk without an obvious, explainable to everyone reward is impossible to justify in the current climate (boom tish)

the local government is doing research into strategic replanting to minimise this, but the commerical benefits arent adding up :/

wind speeds and wave heights have increased significantly over the last quarter of a century. So it seems that things in the ocean are getting tougher. Wind and waves really are getting bigger and stronger.

An increase in average wind speeds blowing over the world’s oceans over the past quarter-century have generated higher waves and rougher seas, and researchers said those increased wind speeds could lead to more water vapor in the air, providing added moisture for rain and potentially increasing rainfall.waves

In a study published online in the journal Science on Thursday, researchers led by Ian Young of Swinburne University of Technology in Australia said the increased wind speed averages could compound any increase from global warming. They added that over a 23-year period, average wind speed over the oceans rose by 0.25 percent per year.

The researchers noted that the proportion of increase in wave height was less than for wind speed, while the increase for extreme winds was more than for average winds. They said that higher winds are not necessarily the result of global warming.

"We found a general global trend of increasing values of wind speed and, to a lesser degree, wave height over this period.The rate of increase for extreme events was most significant."said Professor Young.

The data showed that wind speeds over the majority of the world's oceans increased by 0.25 to 0.5 per cent every year.

However, when it came to extremely high winds, the speed increased by a yearly average of 0.75 per cent.

But in some parts of the ocean, extreme waves increased by up to 1 per cent per annum.

To put that in perspective, Professor Babanin uses the example of wave heights studied off one of Australia's roughest coasts.

"Today, the average height of the top 1 per cent of waves off south-west Australia's coastline is around six metres. That's over one metre higher than in 1985."

For somebody who dismisses Computer modelling you seem to be happy to accept Pielke's.

The problem with Pielke's scenario is the region had been cleared by the fifties, so it should have had an increasing effect until land clearing stopped and then stabilised. How can it have an increasing effect 60 years later? He implies that somehow cleared land releases more heat over time.

This issue is largely a technical interest as now in 2011, there has been statistically significant warming since 1998.



China's Coal consumption has massively increased and almost equals the rest of the world and as China's Coal consumption is expected to double in less than twenty years efforts to mitigate Carbon emissions in the rest of the world seem quite pointless.

The idea that China will somehow alter it's Coal consumption in regards to mitigating Global warming is shown to be a fallacy as China has trebled it's coal use over the last ten years, a period in which Global warming concerns have been at their highest.

Chinas consumption is of such a level that it effects the rest of the Globe, as Greenhouse gasses are not confined to the entity that created them.
