There's enough reason for him to be working for the US without violating Occams.

Too much is being made of the " equipment". Everything I see is pretty close to regular gear for walking about in that environment. Other than the pics , which also make little sense ( skyhook knows what's there. Are we supposed to think the US and Israel don't ? ) , it's fairly routine stuff. I guess it scared the people in the media because some of it was painted black.

but one fact is self-evident....

One was a regular cell like might be owned if you live in Florida. One was a satellite phone , NBD. The other was probably an embassy radio with phone capabiities. Again , too much has been made of the gear , the gear is comparatively innocuous when considering the legitimate situations and circumstances.

If it were up to me , we would have zero presence in the region. I want us out for a number of reasons , not least of which is the desire to put no more good men in this position, right or wrong. I acknowledge that the minute a guy goes outside the legal bounds of his status ( and that is the root question here), he is on his own. I also know that for every conjecture that makes the man look like either James Bond or Inspector Cluseau ( depending on the moment's need) , I can offer another plausible one that paints a picture of a legitimate guy doing legitimate things , who didn't want to run around unarmed in Lahore ( don't blame him).

The Embassy employees feel unsafe getting cash from ATMs , as they stick out like sore thumbs as rich Americans. Some of them , mainly women , give their card to a trusted co- worker , the ex SF guy that they know carries a pistol whether he is supposed to or not. As an officer and a gentleman , he gets their cash out for them routinely and thinks nothing of it. And then these two guys follow him for a couple of hours , no matter how hard he tries to shake them. They are on bikes , which have been used as getaways in the crowded streets many times. He has a shitload of cash. One of the riders , in the course of traffic , let's his weapon " print" where it can be seen. In tight quarters , they turn or otherwise look as they are about to block or assault. He , not being a cop and accustomed to initiating the fight when it is clearly ( to him) about to start no matter what he does , opens fire.

See ? My bias is to give someone of decent history ( nothing otherwise has been shown) the benefit of full investigation. Other portraits can easily be painted to reflect other biases. This is the Internet , and conjecture is the very lifeblood of it. Just don't be too sure. It's almost never what it looks like , especially when someone says the guy is rigging bombs because of the cell phones. Gimme a break( note: this accusation was not made here , but in the counterpunch article , I think).

but methinks someone here once asked for condolences to be forwarded to that young man who could have put carlos the jackal away but was denied permission to do so by higher authority and yet was allowed to jump into denied territory in his 70's to put somebearded bad actors out of business.
