Capitalism a social contract between individual and society? News to me.

The game has surely always been rigged to a degree; immensely wealthy people and enterprises already established in a market have an advantage over the more modestly funded newcomers.

Venezuela is blessed / cursed with great oil and mineral wealth - this and this alone is the foundation of it's "new economics" - which seems to consist of pouring out government treasure to water Chavez's pet projects. The yield seems to be low growth and high inflation. All in all, I'd rather be in Shanghai.

Nationalizations by Hugo Chavez have been mostly meant to increase offer and lower prices, to keep revenue (oil) in Venezuela, instead of seeing it fleeing to Miami, and (agriculture) to enable small farmers to own land. I'm convinced that in a few years time we will have to recognize that the results are pretty good.

The dogmatically devout seldom have a sense of humour - unless their scriptures say it's compulsory. A hundred years hence, Anglos on reservations or space pirate ships everywhere will still be making jokes about latino fuzz-busting shenanigans - because pubic topiary, politics and hats made out of fruit are all intrinsically amusing.
