Col, don't get mad at me for saying a prayer tonight for the Japanese people suffering this monumental tragedy. I wish I was back in Yokuska right about now to have the opportunity to do something for the victims other than just watch in helpless fascination at nature's power.

For the scientists on the board...what's the equivalent energy level (eq. in TNT, or joules) of that wall of water that ripped homes off their foundation, and carried vehicles like they were leaves on a pond? Or does that comparison only work with the Richter or Moment Magnitude Scale?

Much ado about nothing? Where has CS ever plainly stated that he is Japanese or is living in Japan? Virtual people are not necessarily real people.

But just in case CS is really Japanese and living in Japan . . best wishes, CS.

I think it appropriate somehow that a thread with much discussion of Col Sun should contain some physics discussion as well.

Have found myself popping in every hour or so to see if he makes contact. Do turn up.

I don't get physics, probably for lack of trying. I get this. To Japan and one particular Japanese gentleman:

The nuke thing worries me. Follow on casualties as well. There may be nobody on the planet better at civil defense than the Japanese , but with the amount of infrastructure damage , oof. It was pointed out that in the Tokyo '29 , more deaths occurred by fire than the initial disaster. Construction has of course changed, and I hope the whole dynamic is a curiosity of history. But I look at that with an eye towards how their police/ fire/ rescue will have to adapt , and see the challenge. Wish I were there , though I am sure Japan needs me not at all.

Epoch changing events in the ME...eruptions of rage against austerity measures versus rage against untenable debt loads combined with the danger of a double-dip recession...a historic earthquake followed by a devastating tsunami followed by potentially nuclear meltdowns in the 3rd largest global economy...WTF is next? An asteroid hits the Yellowstone Caldera causing massive venting and eruption of a super-volcano?????

I'm officially wondering if those f-ing Mayans were on to something.

I am always impressed with the civility, discipline and resilience of the Japanese people.

Here is to Japan pulling through. I predict a quick recovery.

You too Colonel.

Great mother of God, Drudge is hinting at a Possible meltdown -- the only thing that comes to mind is the nightmare sequence in Kurosawa's In Dreams.

Wow that's pretty real.

This video is kind of zen in that calm after the storm sort of way. It's intense showing the water flowing back out, beached ships, cars floating over levees like bath toys.

An explosion has been reported at Fukushima. Time to get REALLY worried. I have been always in favour of nuclear power. I'm about to change my mind.

Fuck man he has never gone this long without posting. I hope he is well, I imagine he is busy a lot of folks are devoting time with trying to find family members and find out if they are ok. Prayers for the Japanese people during this horrible crisis.
I can never think of anything witty to put into a signature.
