I don't know why it is not reported in the media that the concrete containment structure of the Japanese BWR reactors are designed to capture and hold a worst-case complete core meltdown without significant radiation release.
The Western reactor designs currently in use bear no resemblance to the Chernobyl type RBMK reactors, which are more difficult to control and have vastly inferior containment structures.
