Depends on internal politics, of which I think little is known. Rumor has it that the son is not as well regarded by the North Korean elites. The DPRK is living on borrowed time, and hopefully this speeds their demise and eventual Korean reunification. People rightly mock DPRK propaganda, but the actual situation there is not funny. Fortunately I read that communication with and awareness of international events has never been more widespread in the North via technology smuggled from China. If North Koreans have been looking around they will notice that this is a good time to buck the system.

and north stayed poor, devastated from Japanese (WW2) war episode and later American war on them

at the same time
