I doubt that king Leopold ever had any good intention towards the native population of the Congo. Like the colonialists, exploitation and not good deeds was the motive. The amputations of the limbs of the natives was no more than the culmination of the excessive cruelty that was a subset of the character of Leopold and in many ways of the many other colonialists.
The cruelty and murderousness of the Arab slave raiders was not intended by me to replace or diminish the cruelty of the Western slave raiders or the colonial exploiters. They both left indelible truama that will take many years and the deployment of extensive resources to begin the process of healing.
