Nor should we be too harsh on the various "Evangelical" groups- whom without we would still be a caste society. Most of Luther (and pre-Melanchon/"Protestant-secular" society) and his criticisms not only are on point but have tradition and are orthodox in pre-Trent Catholicism.
The biggest difference, and the reason why Evangelicals are caught in the political/Randian trap today, is because they were too successful and their traditions have lost all barrings in language.
A religion that is ordered on the justification upon God's justice and not his honor presupposes a sovereign Deity who cannot be spoken of through reasonable terms. So as easy as it is to have a fiduciary faith in that sovereign, it is just as easy to disbelieve.
Our language cannot handle both at the same time in the same polis, and Evangelicals are attracted to "conservatives" in the Republican party because they ape language relics that no longer apply in today's society. It is the rejection of an active tradition- and they are flailing in many respects. [this is not to endorse the Catholic/Orthodox view; who have had this language trouble for the last 500 years- and whose laypersons are just as "protestant" and in the same boat]
