Obama has sacked Gen. Stanley McChrystal and nominated Gen. David Petraeus, current commander of US Central Command, to replace him as the General in charge of the war in Afghanistan.
This is a highly unusual move, not the least of which because Petraeus is taking on a new post that is decidedly not a promotion, considering that as CENTCOM commander, Afghanistan was just one of several nations in his Area of Responsibility.
McChrystal, who technically resigned, was sacked because of remarks attributed to him and his command staff which, appearing to mock the Administration, were printed in Rolling Stone this week.
Petraeus is the apple in the eye of Republicans who really want to run Eisenhower 2012. But now it's looking like the General, once he is speedily approved by the Senate in his new appointment, will not have a lot of time to spend in these United States...
