When I first heard about this rape case, I wondered how contrived it was.

For quite some time Sweden hosted what was, for the establishment, the greatest threat to everything good: Pirate Bay. Then, things changed and a series of dubious prosecutions resulted in the convictions of the PB owners at the time; the judge on the case was found to have an obvious conflict of interest for one thing. It is not so important that the convictions did little to stop file sharing, so much as the complete reversal of the Swedish legal position, never really justified, and actually somewhat extra-legal.

Here, we apparently have an abuse of prosecutorial discretion against another Internet rebel, seems a similar pattern. I don't want to go all tinfoil hat about it, but I think that the US, and others, made a concerted effort to infiltrate the Swedish bureaucracy over PB, and now have used it again against Assange.
