Not sure how McCain ever got called " Maverick ". My bet is some dumbass junior staffer talked to a reporter after seeing Top Gun and realizing , " Hey , wasn't McCain in Navy vistlik ? He was whorin' and drinkin' , right ? Bang , political gold ! ".
He's a full bore politician. Whatever he was back then has nearly no bearing on his political career. When the republicans came to the conclusion that he was the best man for the job , we knew it was over.
