Mr. Perfect likes the Electoral College as it is because Democrats have won the popular vote the past several elections. We wouldn't have had a Republican President since the first Bush if there was no electoral college.

62% of Americans also found the King of Queens hilarious and 62% of Americans can't name people in their state or federal governments....
The point isn't that people "dumb" or "uneducated" but people don't always think things through or support things for myriads of reasons that have nothing to do with the question asked.
...how else do you explain some of these candidates who run?

First, we should institute the popular vote in the UN, just to see how it works out.

If the Electoral College is swapped for the popular vote, there is little reason to have individual states anymore. Also, by the same reasoning, there should be no Senate, only representatives from geographical areas of shared interest. Hell, why not go full tilt and have minor celebrities present bills to the viewing public, and have voting by text message. We could call it "Legislating with the Stars"

I wouldn't be so sure about Democrats having the majority of votes in a popular election. So called "Independents" make up a plurality of voters and big states like California, New York and Massachusetts have large Republican-registered voters. Some of those states are only 55-45 type splits. And you'd need to mobilize the cities for each and every election to keep your power. That is not a winning strategy, and I could definitely see resentment in even in the suburbs and ex-urbs.
More likely I imagine something like the house: wild swings in the populace every so often while a party could and will hold power for a generation at a time.

I'm wondering why you didn't do all that when you had the chance after 2008. You could have done all of it.
I have some ideas, but would be interesting in hearing yours.
