Well, Mr. P,
Going out and saying "aw fuck, what were we thinking? let's put our tail between our legs and do a soviet-style u-turn out of AFG" is bound to be great for one's career in the DoD, isn't it?
Army people like war: money, cushy contracts for their friends in the contracting business, cool toys, promotions all around - it's damn fun if you're not a grunt. Why would any of them go and ruin the fun?
Even for politicians, there's the whole nasty business of losing face. No POTUS ever wants to face a smirking Putin, Sarkozy or Hu. Plus it makes all sorts of nobodies go all uppity just when deploying those becomes politically difficult at home. Much easier to waste a bit of GDP (as CH kindly pointed out in the Afghan thread) and a thousand young men every year, and leave the mess for the next POTUS to clean up.
