I found this chart from a 1959 US Army study briefly discussed rather interesting.

Obviously times are different, but it looks like just 150 yards bought far more safety that I would've guessed.

A friend just got the new Ruger Gunsite Scout . He loves it but hasn't shot it or acquired optics for it yet. Wants better open sights ( Marine) .

I keep thinking of getting that milspec AR .

Don't know what it is, but I'm agin'it.

Again , artillery killed more soldiers than rifles ever thought about.

In 90 days , I will have put together another front line kit including armor. Then , health and time willing , a couple of schools and associated workups. It's time , kids.

fwiw id let it happen on a personality type level, some girls are quite tomboy and you cant deny em that aspect of life if they are naturals for it.

my missus who isnt that tomboy, quite likes our big dogs on those levels, i realise in a world full of guns it wouldnt help, but in our area of bored teenagers on speed it has been proven they tend to pick the next place when confronted with such... the police even found one group who had a local street map with big red crosses for each house that had big dogs.

tomboy is in the head, not the dress sense, especially when they get a bit older and less driven to be different :P

What I meant to communicate is that they will have a certain baseline of knowledge. I daresay it will be broader based than is common. But none of them will get the kind of teaching a son would have received.

I hold this to be a self evident truth; all males , unless they have a reason for exception ( and there are many legitimate ones ) ought to by default not just be capable of defending themselves , but ought to be in a state of mental and physical readiness whereby they can assist their community in all things including limited offensive operations as local authority deems nescesary. This may be thought of under the rubric of the tribe mounting a defense, a posse raised , a militia commanded or even the chief men deciding justice has not been satisfied. It's complicated. It may be why I have resisted getting a real frontline service weapon. Owning such a thing for me doesnt mean just learning how to shoot and be safe with it. It means learning to use it as it was intended. It is not a defensive item. Kinda heavy stuff.

i think you touched on this before when you mentioned (paraphrasing) "our culture isnt capable of tackling lawlessness anymore" in the other thread on detroit.

self evident in the current climate, twitch... im not anti gender, but i do think some males do chase what was traditionally female roles and vice versa, and in my usual way i think its best for each individual to work themselves out fully in a no excuses, no justifying yourself way - this is real to me in ways theory is not, anything less is walking dead... which does leave me in a hard explain middle ground on gender roles.

i doubt id easily bring up a soft boy, but thats another story and something i havent had to find out, i doubt my genepool creates them much anyway :P

funny thing about my current love of cameras, my favoured technique is no tripod, no flash.. which is an approach that requires a particular "still moment" with a gentle squeeze moment...something i developed during a another hobby period and have maintained to this day.

I have thought of giving up a gun for a camera in terms of hunting. I do like pork , though.

I wouldnt have a bit of a problem with a boy that wasn't Tonka tough. Like I said , many valid excuses. If he turned out to be a gay Sufi practicing harmlessness , I'd be fine with that. Better be a freaking good sitar player or whatever.

rant away, slay your strawman - hes not going anywhere.

i mentioned i dont do the type of hunting you want to rant about, if you care to read - perhaps large blinking fonts would help.

killing birds and roos for dinner would be as far i could go in this modern australia if was i in a situation i needed to, getting good at distance shots was my main concern when i did shoot, and i stuck to pest animals like goats or foxes.

talk to me of your time in the african wilderness with a .50 hanging out of your ringhole, while you fought off crocodiles, include pictures too.

---edit---

to give you some credit for just rush reading, i have mentioned before in another topic i walked away from guns EXACTLY because of the destructive idiots who killed anything that moved, the whole f*cking thing repulsed me and i sat back completely indifferent when they took guns off city kids, i dont think city kids should have guns.

---more edit---

you strike me as some romantic type who hasnt left school so if you cant detect sarcasm in the african wilderness jibe, ill make it explicit here
