I have never had much time for the Eurosceptic "Little Englanders" - till now. The rest are caving in to Franco-German bullying. The point is that the UK regarded the EU as a necessary evil for economic reasons, but as the Eurozone can look forward to a decade of stagnation at best, and the export markets are in the developing world, let the inward looking Euros go their own way.

The Commonwealth is a nostalgic joke, though, only the Queen is committed to it.

Well, for a disunited continent Europe didn't do so bad over the centuries. If you didn't like a government or they would not listen, you just moved to the next state. Contrast that with China. Yes, you got wars, but so did China.

Anyway, both wars and global dominance are no longer on the agenda for Europe. The point is that this is another half baked compromise, because it will only work if the ECB becomes a proper central bank with the right for quantitative easing - but the German voter will not stand for that. It will fall apart in due course, or move to a full federal state: the French are queasy about the latter. In a country where opinion polls suggest that 70% want to leave the EU, then there is no way Cameron could sign up to that. Britain has deluded itself for years about being at the "heart of Europe" , it was never going to happen.



That's a bit melodramatic admittedly, and harks back to when Germany wielded rather stronger weapons than credit...

Look, give America 20 years to straighten out its own affairs. By that time, we'll be able to help you dig your way out of the Franco-German invasion.

I thought the Eurozone was in a lot more trouble than the UK. Time will tell.

The Brits were offered free tickets on the Titanic and they are simply refusing to go.

It does not have to do with mourning for empire, as the author claims, but it does have to do with a different vision. This was going to happen sooner or later.

Still, London feels a lot more global than inward looking Paris and even Berlin.

Also the Germans might miss the UK as counterweight to France, but Germany is in a "do as you are told" mood at present.
