He seems to have been a creative genius who was a complete control freak autocrat, and had a level of egoism which was almost comic (watch some of his interviews). He almost certainly needed these qualities to achieve what he did, it takes all sorts. He did a lot more good than harm, which is the best that any of us could hope for as an epitaph - especially as this a charismatic driven personality type that could do a lot of harm if pursuing the wrong ends.

R.I.P, although I am glad I don't hold any Apple stock. Doubts about its future without him are evident, such a personality does not train mere mortal successors.
Pessimism is the soft option.

Jobs achieved a lot in his lifespan and he could envision how to optimize the form/function. I have no doubt that he could have done the same to a product as mundane as a shopping cart.

As a person , there are several disturbing events in his life .

Copied from wiki
--------------------
"Jobs returned to his previous job at Atari and was given the task of creating a circuit board for the game Breakout. According to Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, Atari had offered $100 for each chip that was eliminated in the machine. Jobs had little interest in or knowledge of circuit board design and made a deal with Wozniak to split the bonus evenly between them if Wozniak could minimize the number of chips. Much to the amazement of Atari, Wozniak reduced the number of chips by 50, a design so tight that it was impossible to reproduce on an assembly line. According to Wozniak, Jobs told Wozniak that Atari had given them only $700 (instead of the actual $5,000) and that Wozniak's share was thus $350."

"Jobs also has a daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs (born 1978), from his relationship with Bay Area painter Chrisann Brennan. She briefly raised their daughter on welfare when Jobs denied paternity by claiming he was sterile; he later acknowledged Lisa as his daughter."

"Arik Hesseldahl of BusinessWeek magazine opined that "Jobs isn't widely known for his association with philanthropic causes", compared to Bill Gates' efforts. After resuming control of Apple in 1997, Jobs eliminated all corporate philanthropy programs
"
----------------------------------

I love the products he helped create and admire Apple as a company.

But I find it difficult to admire Jobs as a person - money & success ain't everything.
May his soul rest in peace.

I don't get why anybody cares about this guy at all. Mediocre at best, fundamentally bad man at worst. Candlelight vigil because the CEO of what is basically a toy company died?

Jobs was about doing original thinking about the best way possible to do something and trusting that it would pay off in the end.

That's why people responded to him more like a pastor than a CEO. There was sense of faith in his actions.

To give credit where it is due, Windows 7 probably wouldn't be anywhere near as good if Microsoft didn't have to compete with Apple.

Likewise, we wouldn't have Android without the iPhone.

Nonc Hillare I prefer not to think of it as disparaging the sinner as much as recognizing a greater proportion of their whole life.

Steve Jobs changed the world. For the better? Maybe. For the worse? I doubt it. But there are some things that Apple innovated that I don't like, though I think that someone would have done it had it not been them. Apple's legacy in the long-run will be big-brotherware.

Bill Gates is more inspiring to me, than Steve Jobs and will ultimately have changed the world for the better more than Steve Jobs.

The Altair 8800 personal computer came out in 1975, a few years before Apple was founded. And Microsoft's founding product was Altair BASIC, in 1975.

.

Tinker, will not go into detail, but Azari, intimately, since 1983, into this

Look folks

MS , Gates, is a SOFTWARE company

Apple and Steve, a HARDWARE-Software-concept company

True, elements, mouse and window interface and and was other people's invention

but, Bell labs and etc full of inventions .. somebody had to put them to use in a concept

but that is not the issue

issue is :

All world shattering things that happened since DOS til today .. 90% of business of information technology of today .. is basically software .. Goggle is software, eBay is software, Facebook is software, Amazon is software and millions of other ideas are all software

well, Tinker

is rehashing window and office anything to report about ? ?

All the above are billion dollars new ideas .. all bread and butter of Gates .. and he missed all of them (despite all the money and engineers he had)

what is MS revenue today ?

90% Window & office

Bill and Melinda Gates did not have a single achievement of their own

MS is a monopoly for MS-OS, but is ignored by America because all world runs on MS-OS (hampering innovations but bringing money for America)) .. same idea as American cigarets (killing all the world but bringing money for America .. CoCa Cola)

Steve Jobs different

He invented the computer for small guy .. he made it easy for the small guy to use computers .. Apple hardware was always leading the computer world, hardware ..

He recognized 15 yrs ago that "masses" will not use computers for computing .. but for information, communication, internet .. gates missed this totally

and for communication, 90% of the "mass" uses will require mobility

meaning internet on mobile devices

1995 PC was dead .. hit the usefulness limit for mass users .. writing a letter (replacing type writer) or spreadsheet not for masses .. if so, all tech sector would have suffered, no micro processor sales growth or memory or or or

internet gave some rebirth to tech sector

but internet was limited communication tool .. most of the time people were no @ their desk

Steve, brought mobile internet to masses .. hardware, easy and excellent (bug free) software, apps, and, affordable price .. now millions of apps is created for mobile connectivity, with new business models and tools for much more .. mobile internet has opened a new universe for business and quality of life (young generation using it and love it .. young kids have same joy with an iPhone as with a Ferrari @ fractional cost of Ferrari)

And Gates ?

he workin on Window 8

why should people upgrade window and Office when the old version doin what they want to do .. lot of people pissed off when they buying new laptop coming with again a new version of Window

Gates and Buffet are similar

Steve, a visionary, different

To compare the two companies is an... ahh... apples and oranges thing. It's a question of ubiquity vs exclusivity in computing platforms.

By restricting their software to a handful of carefully controlled hardware platforms, Apple have made their software development (and more crucially, software testing) life orders of magnitude easier than that of the Microsofts and Linux flavours of this world. They don't suffer the immense challenge and expense of developing and testing their software to run on the explosively diverse array of hardware combinations that exist in the marketplace in a timely manner.

True, Apple have brought mobile computing into the mass market, and they still remain the goto guys for media production and editing technology, but they are also just as guilty of stifling innovation and competition as Microsoft - current nuisance lawsuits against HTC and Samsung being prime examples of their conduct.

Apple's true genius lies in marketing and design - it is the brushed aluminium and sleek lined "lifestyle" which the masses are being sold when they pay the Mac premium for functional, serviceable but unremarkable hardware.

Saying the PC was dead in 1995 is retarded. Steve Jobs may have thought that then, but he was wrong. It's forgivable because he was wrong in foresight. Anyone saying it now, is wrong in hindsight and that's unforgivable. 1995 is around the time when PC saturation in the household crossed the 50% threshold and PCs started becoming a new thing. It's around the time when Doom came out and showed the capabilities as a Virtual Reality platform that the PC has. It's the time where a PC really became more than just a business machine. Also the time when the masses discovered the internet.

Steve Jobs did not invent much of anything. Steve Wozniak invented most of the things that Steve Jobs gets credit for. Steve Jobs genius was recognizing the trends and where they would go. All of your criticisms of Bill Gates also apply to Steve Jobs. He was a guy who took credit for other people's inventions, throughout his entire life. Good businessman, definitely. But Apple produced NOTHING that was unique to Apple.

Not a big Mac fan myself but they are aesthetically very nice. The iPhone, however, was truly revolutionary. Most forward-looking gadget of the last 10-20 years, no question about it. Cell phones before it were barely useable junk and even now, no smart phone is as well designed. I'm still on a 3GS and have seen nothing worth switching to.

The genius of Apple is striking the balance between functionality, power, and minimalism. Adding features is easy, but having the clarity of vision to see the forest for the trees and make things pleasant to use takes a certain kind of brilliance.

Jobs's talent was not going with trends. That was how Microsoft made it big. Jobs defined the trends and the iPhone is the ultimate embodiement of that.
