It is a Ponzi scheme in fact, but the reason it's unsustainable is because people have been dipping into the fund. There is no reason it couldn't sustain itself. It's just that starting with Reagan people used it to fund their own pet projects.
The canary didn't die because this mine is dangerous, it died because it's lazy and wasn't raised with a proper work ethic.

It's a Ponzi scheme. At 3 workers to 1 retiree unsustainability is guaranteed.
